“Look tomorrow Daniel, I’d like you to meet Nsansa. I’ve spoken about her a few times. She’s going to cook a meal. What do you all like? We could go to Devil’s Dyke in the afternoon or even High Lodge afterwards.”

“Mmm. Okay I suppose. She won’t preach at us will she? Like you know who? We like roast. Yorkshires and stuff, and pavlova. Will we get a chance to play football as usual, or maybe try ‘Go Ape’?”

Nsansa put the cup down beside Vernon and ruffled his hair, an affectionate gesture that was rather spoiled when she stepped on the cat who spilled the tea over him in its haste to get free.

“What the hell” Vernon said into the phone.

“Alright then we won’t.” Daniel interjected huffily. Vernon simultaneously unruffled Daniel’s feathers and Chucky’s fur, leaving till later the comfort strokes Nsansa would no doubt require.
